Title: Chamomile Lawn
Fandom: LOTR
Characters: Théodred

Disclaimer: Characters and places aren't mine, I'm just playing with them for a while

There were no formal gardens in Rohan. No raised beds where flowers were forced to grow in straight lines, no hedges trimmed into unnecessary cones and spirals.

Outsiders may scoff and call them uncivilized, unable to appreciate the beauty of a garden, but they were wrong.

Rohan’s gardens, like her people, grew wild and free.

Théodred’s own secret garden lay in an ancient grove of trees. Blue borage, feverfew daisies, scarlet bergamont and the purples of vervain and lavender surrounded a carpet of chamomile lawn which filled the glade with a sweet soft scent when crushed beneath a lover’s embrace.

It's what Rohan has always represented to me, wild freedom :)

Thanks for reading, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I really like this picture of Rohan as a place of freedom, in every aspect. I can picture him visiting his garden when he needs respite from the cares of his life.

I like your contrast in mindset and social outlook between Gondor and the Mark - and Theodred's grove is beautifully defined.

Dad: Boromir... why do you always reek of chamomile when you come back from Rohan?

Boromir: Er... dunnow Dad... they... um, drink a lot of tea there...?

Well, hello there! It's good to see you back!

I really like your contrast between the regimented Gondorian gardens and the more natural, untrammeled Rohirric view of nature. Of course they had no time for precise gardening, their backs were always pretty much to the wall. Not that it stopped them from appreciating beauty wherever they found it.

I particularly like the flowering herbs you've listed, all very colorful, refreshing and aromatic. I can just imagine Theodred and Boromir his companion enjoying the pleasant scent of crushed chamomile, underlying the other sensory pleasures of the moment. Lovely, lovely.

Hi!! It's good to dip my toes back into an old favourite place now and then. It doesn't matter how far I roam, or what other amazing things grab my attention, a part of heart will always be riding free with Théo :)

I'm so glad you liked the fic! I chose herbs to give a hint at the practical side of the Rohirric nature too. The bright flowers were a riot of colour, and a feast for the senses, but they were also useful.

I can imagine that too :)
